Dutchman's-Breeches Wildflower, Ohio

The Eastern woodland wildflower Dutchman's-Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria) is one of the "early risers" of spring in the hardwood forests of eastern North America. They almost look like kernels of white corn, except for their spread-V shapes. The blossoms hang drooping gracefully overtop their green, fan-like compound leaves.

This closeup photo was made in April 2003 in Germantown MetroPark in southwest Ohio, near Dayton. The park is a unit of Five Rivers MetroParks.

Photo location: Montgomery County, Ohio.
